This project is an initiative of a team from the Mathematics Education Department of the Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE) to promote the use of interactive Information and Communication Technology (ICT) based tools in the teaching and learning of Mathematics in Mauritius. The project is in line with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) Secondary which highlights the importance of ICT in the teaching and learning of mathematics.
ICT based tools provide innumerable benefits to the educational sector. One defining feature of ICT based tools is their ability to transcend time and space. Online course materials, for example, may be accessed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. ICT based tools can enhance the quality of education in several ways: by increasing learner motivation and engagement by facilitating the acquisition of basic skills, and by enhancing teacher training. ICT based tools can also promote the shift to a learner-centered environment.
The project is pioneering in the sense that no tools adapted to the local syllabus exists. The tool is an attempt to integrate the use of ICT in the teaching and learning of mathematics in Mauritius. At present only A-level Vectors are included, but gradually ICT interactive tools will be developed for all levels and uploaded in the
webpage.
The research team hopes that this innovative project will bring a new dimension to the teaching and learning of
mathematics in the country and that students, teachers and parents will make optimum use of it.
